January precipitation didn't hurt, but it didn't help enough

Iowa's soil is still much too dry in many places, despite about an inch of water equivalent that fell during January. It was a relatively low-snow January, and that hasn't helped our deep running deficit over the last 365 days.


Drought keeps hanging on

The Sioux City Journal has an update on the drought that says northwestern Iowa is low on subsoil moisture, short on precipitation, and high on anxiety that the drought will have a serious impact throughout 2013 -- even if the rains get back to normal.
